In this video, real random variables are introduced on countable basic spaces, i.e. without the need to address questions of measurability. Random variables are not variables, as is sometimes wrongly claimed, especially in school books, but real-valued mappings (functions) that are defined on a set Omega (the so-called basic space). They provide data compression and they describe events in a natural way. The term random variable is also used as a synonym for random variable.
