Today marks exactly ten years since actor, singer and artist of life Ramses Shaffy passed away. To this day, he is a great source of inspiration for many artists. The now 78-year-old pianist spoke with much love and admiration about the 1960s when he performed with the ensemble Shaffy Chantant, accompanying Ramses Shaffy and Liesbeth List on the piano. Ramses Shaffy was born in 1933 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, in present-day Paris, as the son of an Egyptian consul and a Polish mother of Russian descent. When he was 7, his mother put him on the train to the Netherlands, where he ended up in a children's home through an aunt and later in a foster family. In 1952, he was accepted at the Amsterdam drama school and played with the Nederlandse Comedie in the city theatre on Leidseplein. In 1964, he founded the ensemble Shaffy Chantant and Ramses also made a career as a singer. Many hits followed, such as 'Sammy' and 'Zing, vecht, huil, bid, lach, werk en verwondering'. Shaffy lived in the Weteringbuurt and from the early 1980s he also played as an actor with Toneelgroep Amsterdam. Shortly after the turn of the century, he was admitted to the Dr. Sarphatihuis in the Plantagebuurt. He suffered from Korsakov due to his long-term excessive alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, from 2005 onwards he occasionally performed again with the band Alderliefste, also together with Liesbeth List.
