Ramayana - EP 62 - The Battle of Kumbhakaran departs Vibhishan Kumbhakaran Dialogue Kumbhakaran War and Paramgati On seeing the giant Kumbhakaran in the battlefield, there is a stampede in the monkey army. Ram suspects that Ravana has come in some illusory form. Then Vibhishan tells that this is his middle brother Kumbhakaran who has been blessed by Lord Brahma to sleep for six months and wake up for one day. According to the previous story, once the three brothers Ravana, Kumbhakaran and Vibhishan had pleased Lord Brahma with their rigorous penance. Kumbhakaran wanted to ask for Indrasana i.e. Indra's throne. The frightened Indra prayed to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. Saraswati sat on Kumbhakaran's tongue. As soon as Kumbhakaran asked for the boon, Nidrasana came out of his mouth instead of Indrasana. Brahma gave him the boon of staying in Nidrasana for the rest of his life. Troubled by this, Ravana asked Brahma that if his younger brother sleeps all his life, how will he see the world. Then Brahma, seeing Ravana's love for his brother, amended the boon given to Kumbhakaran to sleep for six months and stay awake for one day. If Kumbhakaran had not been given the boon of sleeping for six months, he would have eaten so much food every day that there would have been a famine in the world. Vibhishan tells Ram that Ravana has woken Kumbhakaran so that he can eat the entire monkey army by evening. Ram is ready to fight with Kumbhakaran, but Vibhishan takes permission from him and goes to talk peace with his brother Kumbhakaran. Vibhishan touches his middle brother's feet and explains that his elder brother Ravana has turned away from religion, so he should support religion and join Ram. Kumbhakaran says that there is no greater sin than leaving a brother alone in times of crisis. He also says that though people call Vibhishan a Ram devotee, but history will call him the biggest traitor and treacherous. Kumbhakaran also tells Vibhishan that if he had learnt the lesson of serving his elder brother from Lakshman, he would not have been accused of fratricide. Kumbhakaran asks Vibhishan to go back to Ram and warn him. At the time of departure, Kumbhakaran gets emotional and says that if the death of all of them including Ravana is predestined in this war, then Vibhishan will be the only one left alive in the Vishrava clan, then he should perform his last rites and fulfill his duty. Vibhishan informs Ram about the failure of the peace talks. After this, Kumbhakaran causes great damage to the monkey army. At one point, he would have killed Angad with his weapon if Hanuman had not come in between and disarmed him. After this, Hanuman comes to the center of the battle, but Kumbhakaran blows away the mountain rock thrown by him in the air with one of his blows. On Kumbhakaran's challenge, Ram sends Lakshman to fight. After the failure of many of his weapons, Kumbhakaran uses Shiva's infallible trident on Lakshman. Lakshman looks helpless but Rudravatar Hanuman comes in between and breaks the trident. After this, Kumbhakaran captures Sugriva in his fist and heads towards Lanka. His plan is that if Sugriva remains imprisoned in Lanka, the monkey army will have to surrender. But before Kumbhakaran enters the fort, Ram stops him and uses Indrastra to cut off both his arms and then attacks with Brahmadanda, due to which his head is cut off and sinks in the sea. Vibhishan may wish for Ram's victory, but due to his blood relation with his dead brother, tears flow from his eyes.
