Tunnel under the Kowarska Pass - a tunnel located under the Kowarska Pass, between the towns of Kowary and Ogorzelec. It is located on railway line no. 308. It is 1025 m long and is one of the longest tunnels in Poland. On May 15, 1882, the first section of the railway line to Kowary was opened. The construction of the continuation of the line required overcoming the Kowarska Pass, located at an altitude of 727 m above sea level. The inclination of the tracks would have been too steep for the trains, so it was necessary to cut a tunnel under the pass. Work began in the autumn of 1901. It was prolonged due to the difficult terrain, as well as the several changes of contractors. On 4 June 1905, the first train to Kamienna Góra passed through the tunnel. From that time, trains began running on the Kamienna Góra – Jelenia Góra railway line. The electrification of the line, completed in 1932, allowed the passage of heavier trains that could not be pulled by steam locomotives, and air pollution was also radically reduced. After World War II, under an agreement between the Soviet and Polish authorities, the electrification of the line was eliminated and steam locomotives were running again. The last train passed through the tunnel in the late 1980s, but it was not until 2007 that it was formally closed. #RailwaytunnelunderKowarskaPass #Kowary #Ogorzelec #HungerRoad #KowarskaPass #LowerSilesia #Poland #pawelszulc1960swindlepaths #railwayline #steamlocomotives #train #tracks #touristattraction #warehouses #rails
