But unlike other afternoons, that would be the last time Rachel would leave school with a smile on her face, alongside her classmates. Rachel disappeared and would only be found 48 hours later, when her family and the police were already searching for her. The cruel way in which her body was found shocked not only Paraná but the entire country. Wrapped in a sheet with blood stains, Raquel was in the fetal position, naked from the waist down, inside a suitcase that had been left at the city's bus station. After being analyzed by forensic doctors, it was discovered that Rachel had been the victim of sexual violence, in addition to having clear signs of physical aggression. There was only one clue on the girl's body that would later prove vital to solving the case: traces of the criminal's DNA. The police then began to search for the face behind the DNA. More than 200 people were tested, from relatives to people close to Rachel, but the attacker was already far away. For 11 years, Rachel's parents waited for the solution to the two main questions surrounding this story: Who did all this to the girl? How did he manage to attract Rachel, who was a girl with above-average intelligence? The answers only came in 2019, after Brazil started to have a genetic database of criminals. Carlos Eduardo dos Santos had been in prison since 2016 in Sorocaba, in the state of São Paulo, but his DNA only entered the database 3 years later. With a history of fraud and child abuse, Carlos Eduardo had no shame in admitting Rachel's death. He says he tricked the girl by saying he was the producer of the clown duo Patati Patatá, and that he would take her to see the recordings of the program... Unfortunately, this lie was the perfect bait for him to hook Raquel. Tried in 2020, the man received more than 50 years in prison for this crime, which were added to the other 22-year sentences for other crimes for which Carlos Eduardo was already serving time.
