In order to meet the need for a national anthem that would bring society together and revitalize common feelings during the most exciting days of the War of Independence, the Ministry of Education organized a lyrics competition in 1921. 724 poems participated in this competition. Mehmet Akif, who initially did not want to participate in the competition because there was a cash prize for the winning lyrics, entered his poem, which he dedicated to our Heroic Army, into the competition upon the insistence of the Minister of Education Hamdullah Suphi.
