Čajniče is a settlement and the center of the municipality of the same name in the far east of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the border with Montenegro. Čajniče has been mentioned since 1477, and since then it has been recording its history. According to Turkish official notebooks, which are still preserved in their original form in Istanbul, in 1477, 14 years after the fall of Bosnia, the Čajniče market had 190 families and 5 unmarried residents. The name Čajniče is reminiscent of Persian origins, and means good and cold water. It is true that there is plenty of water in Čajniče. Many people discovered it and settled in it. Later, many travelers discovered it, and visited it for years. Until 1572, Čajniče was part of the Herzegovina Sandžak. It was not until 1582 that it was mentioned as an independent kadiluk. At 15 km from Čajnič, the medieval town of Samobor (near Međuriječje) was built in 1379 by Sandalj Hranić. For the city itself, he says that there are 5 Muslim and 3 Christian neighborhoods, 700 large and small one-story and two-story buildings, covered with tiles, boards, shingles and stone slabs. At the same time, he states that the city has 50 watermills, three madrasas, five mektebs, four dervish tekkes and three inns, an imaret (kitchen for the poor), one hamam and about 200 shops.
