Regarding the plot, I can say that the film shows us very well in what limited conditions women of that time found themselves (the film depicts the 20s of the XX), they see nothing but life in the house of their feudal husband. Their actions are constrained and all that remains for them is to fight for a grain of attention from the master. The main character of the film, Songlin, having married a feudal lord against her will and having ended up in a house where 3 more wives coexist, at first treats all the traditions existing in this house with skepticism and misunderstanding. One of them is that in the morning all the wives go out into the common corridor, and the servants announce with whom the master will spend the night. And the one with whom the master spends the night receives the dominant right over decisions made in the family, for example, she chooses what and how everyone will eat for dinner. For the sake of this right, the wives compete with each other, doing different mean things to each other. Although at the beginning it seems that only one of the wives is fighting, by the middle we understand that this is not the case. Here I would also like to touch on the topic of trust, which is raised in the film. When those whom you consider friends plot behind your back and vice versa, when those who were contradictory turned out to be much kinder and wiser than it seemed.
