#ModernKorea #HaitaiTigers #SeonDongYeol KBS ModernKorea Episode 5 'Dynasty' is a sad but brilliant record of the 19 years of Haitai Tigers that comforted the pain of the times. The year after the 5th Republic was launched in 1981, professional baseball began in each region. Honam, where no large corporations were willing to sponsor until the end. In the end, a confectionery company took over and founded Haitai Tigers. The founding members were only 15. Kim Seong-han, who entered as a batter, set a record of 10 wins, .300 batting average, and RBI king in his first year of professional baseball while playing as a starting pitcher and batter. They were labeled as the poorest team in the league because they were based in the most neglected region. However, poverty was the representative spirit of Haitai Tigers. Armed with 'no teeth, gums', 'one against a hundred', and 'hungry spirit', Haitai Tigers caused a frightening storm in professional baseball history. In 1983, the first year that manager Kim Eung-yong took office, the Haitai Tigers, contrary to everyone's expectations, won their first Korean Series championship. After the miraculous victory, the Haitai Tigers achieved a legendary four-peat in the Korean Series from 1986 to 1989, opening the 'Haitai Dynasty Era'. For the people of Gwangju who had to live against prejudice and discrimination, baseball meant more than baseball. The baseball stadium was their only outlet. Was that why? For 18 years since its founding, the Haitai Tigers were not allowed to play in Gwangju on May 18. On that day, the players fought desperately, determined not to lose. 'Tears of Mokpo' resonated when the Haitai Tigers won. The people of Gwangju sang their saddest cheering song at their happiest and happiest moments. It was as if this song was a cleansing ritual that soothed their sorrow. The 19 years of the Haitai Tigers were a grand drama. The Haitai Dynasty of the 80s, led by the great coach Kim Eung-yong and the best players such as Kim Bong-yeon, Kim Seong-han, Kim Il-kwon, and national treasure pitcher Sun Dong-yeol, continued in the 90s with Lee Soon-cheol and Lee Jong-beom. They advanced to the Korean Series in 1997 and won their 9th victory, and in December of that year, President Kim Dae-jung of Honam achieved a change of government. However, the glory of Haitai Tigers ended in 1997. Haitai, which was hit hard by the IMF, had to let go of Sun Dong-yeol, Lee Jong-beom, and Kim Eung-yong one after another due to management difficulties, and eventually went into public sale. In 2001, Haitai became history, and the owner of the tigers changed. In that way, the 'Haitai' Tigers disappeared. However, the Haitai Dynasty that we loved and passionately enthusiastically back then will live forever in everyone's hearts.
