According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 10 million people in the world infected by Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, a disease that kills more than ten thousand people in Latin America every year. Forgotten by governments and the pharmaceutical industry, which does not invest in researching an effective treatment due to lack of profitability, its victims continue to die in silence, only helped by NGOs such as Doctors Without Borders, which has been assisting patients with Chagas for fifteen years. A group of scientists from the University of Granada, in collaboration with the Institute of Molecular Science of the University of Valencia, is developing new compounds, still in the experimental phase with mice, that could help combat the disease in the future.
