In the first half of the 1970s, in the predominantly Eskimo coastal village of Novoye Chaplino (Chukotka), a shaman named Ag'lyu, about whom his contemporaries have preserved many memories, died. Ag'lyu is, on the one hand, a hero of a modern myth, and on the other hand, a hero of the relatively recent Soviet past. He is a respected shaman, the embodiment of tradition and the miraculous gift inherent in individual Eskimos, and at the same time a magician, a cheat, a deceiver who loved to drink and always needed money to cure his hangover. The memories of underground shamanic rituals of the post-war period and the anecdotal miracles performed by Ag'lyu, collected by Dmitry in the winter of 2020, are considered in the context of contemporary reflection on the "old life" and post-Soviet nostalgia for the sense of community and ritual saturation that took place during that period. Why was Aglyu called "the most powerful shaman," while later living knowledgeable Eskimos were not called shamans? What do memorials about shamans tell us about ritual dynamics in coastal Chukotka? Can we write about the disappearance of shamanism among the Asian Eskimos or is the burial of this tradition premature?
