The white villages (pueblos blancos) and small towns in Andalusia are characterized by the architecture and culture of the Moorish era. Between the 8th and 15th centuries, the Moors created this unique architectural style, which the inhabitants maintain to this day. Thick walls conceal beautiful, lushly planted courtyards, the patios. The sleepy villages are also characterized by the narrow and steep alleys. The white facades not only give the villages their unmistakable appearance, but above all protect them from the hot Andalusian sun - similar to the villages in North Africa. Then as now, lime is used to create the brilliant white. Mojacar in the Almeria region is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful mountain villages, where the Moorish past can still be admired in many places. #pueblosblancos #whitevillages #mojacar
