The Brassaplein is the central place of Nieuw Nickerie. Here you will find most of the important buildings of the city: the Openbare Markt Nickerie, the police station, the police station and the post office. Originally an Indonesian coconut drink that was brought to Suriname by the Javanese. Economy in Nickerie The main source of income is agriculture. Rice cultivation is particularly important in this; Nickerie is the largest rice producer in Suriname. Rice is grown on a large and medium scale near Wageningen and on a small scale in various settlements throughout the district. In addition, a number of other export crops are also planted, such as bananas and sugar cane. Furthermore, livestock farming, mainly cattle, but also sheep, goats, chickens and ducks, is relatively important in Nickerie compared to other districts and fish is caught in the swamps. In some places, forestry is practiced on a small scale. There is still little industry. There are sawmills and a few companies in the luxury and food sector. River boats use the Nickerie River mainly to transport rice to other parts of the country. Close to the mouth in Nieuw-Nickerie there is a harbour, where mainly bananas and rice are loaded onto seagoing vessels for export to other countries.
