The groups that seized power in Syria say they have discovered centers for the production and export of Captagon tablets, a psychostimulant drug. A large amount of the drug was found hidden in electrical components in a warehouse on the outskirts of Damascus. The warehouse is said to belong to Maher Assad, the former president's brother and military commander. The drugs were also found at military bases controlled by Maher Assad. Experts say the Captagon trade was a source of income for Syria, whose economy has collapsed and is under sanctions. Reuters reported that curbing Captagon trade was a key demand of Arab governments that have restored ties with Syria to Assad.
