Seriously ill - but nothing physically can be found. Whether it's back, stomach or headaches, dizziness, visual disturbances or even paralysis: according to studies, one in three visits to the GP's practice ends with the result: "We can't find anything physically." A diagnosis quickly arises that nobody wants: #psychosomatic. But how can our psyche make us physically ill? To find out for TerraXplore, biologist Jasmina Neudecker meets with Wiebke Host. The 30-year-old mother of two children suffers from seizures in the brain and a so-called tic disorder. Physical examinations, however, find no cause for this. Her diagnosis is therefore: functional neurological disorder, or FNS for short. Something in the nervous system is no longer working, although there is no structural damage whatsoever. The suspicion: stress and emotional strain could be the triggers. And indeed: #psychotherapy and #stressmanagement have alleviated her severe symptoms. Jasmina learns from Prof. Nadine Lehnen why psychosomatic illnesses are not imaginary and what stress and life stress have to do with them. With an exciting experiment, the researcher can show that functional complaints are real and measurable. But what does that mean for therapy? While searching for clues, Jasmina Neudecker meets the neurologist Dr. Anne Weißbach, who taught her tremor patient Martina Wabner a special strategy with which she can trick her brain. This video is part of an entire Terra Xplore season on the topic of "Use your thoughts!" - you can see all three episodes in the ZDFmediathek. ????https://kurz.zdf.de/Gedanken/ ******* CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro 01:10 Seriously ill with no diagnosis 05:44 Can our head make the body ill? 08:02 Why psychosomatics is not imaginary 12:18 What role does stress play? 15:14 Why the brain is the key 16:21 Can attention shifting help? 20:29 Where the dysfunction could be in the brain 22:52 Psychotherapy and stress management also help 26:01 Conclusion 27:00 Endcard ******* You can also find more videos from the Terra X cosmos in the media library: http://kurz.zdf.de/XploreOL/ Terra X on Facebook: / zdfterrax Terra X on Instagram: / terrax ******* OUR SOURCES ????
