In this episode of the Anesthesia World Podcast, we discuss promising psychedelic substances in medicine and the phenomenon that has been called the renaissance of psychedelic science. Substances such as LSD, ayahuasca, MDMA (ecstasy), ibogaine, and even psilocybin found in magic mushrooms have been researched for the treatment of various mental health problems, such as depression, post-traumatic stress, and drug addiction. In this episode, we talk about each of them with the help of guests with extensive experience in the subject: Dartiu Xavier da Silveira, a renowned psychiatrist, specialist in drug addiction, and author of several studies with psychedelic substances; and Marco Algorta, entrepreneur and CEO of Clínica Beneva, the first clinic dedicated to psychedelic-assisted therapies in Latin America; and Bruno Rasmussen, medical director of Clínica Beneva and specialist in the use of ibogaine for drug addiction. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, studies and use of psychedelic substances gained ground to treat various types of illnesses, including alcoholism, as was the case with LSD, which was banned in the United States in 1968, giving rise to prejudice against this type of compound that ended up marginalizing all psychedelics. From 1980 onwards, clinical studies with almost all psychedelic compounds fell into disuse. They resurfaced at the turn of the century and today excite neuroscientists, doctors and investors, due to their potential to treat mental disorders such as refractory depression, chemical dependency, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, etc. In the last five years, almost three thousand scientific articles have been published on the subject.
