A ten-day trip to Provence with excursions between Avignon and Aix-en-Provence takes us to the Vaucluse department with a detour to Bouches-du-Rhone. From our quarters near Pernes-les-Fontaines, our first destinations are Carpentras and Avignon on the Rhone with its medieval papal residence. We visit Vaison-la-Romaine, once settled by Romans, and circle the small mountain range of the Dentelles de Montmirail west of Mont Ventoux. Starting at the imposing karst spring of the Sorgue in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, we cross the Vaucluse highlands to the famous Cistercian abbey of Sénanque and continue via the picturesque mountain villages of Gordes and Joucas into the land of ochre to Roussillon. We also travel through the highlands of Vaucluse via Venasque and Villes-sur-Auzon through the gorge of the river Nesque, which is up to 400 m deep, to Monieux. In Sault we turn off towards Mont Ventoux and return to the starting point via Bedoin and Mazan. Between the plateau of Vaucluse and the Luberon mountain range lies the town of Apt in the Calavon valley. Here we visit the large Saturday weekly market, which is one of the most beautiful in Provence. Our last tour takes us to Aix-en-Provence, the historic capital of Provence south of the Durance in the Bouches-du-Rhone department. After a tour of the first town on Gallic soil founded by the Romans, we return to our accommodation after crossing the Luberon mountains via the charming towns of Lourmarin, Bonnieux and Ménerbes.
