Storms and heavy rain cause the rivers to swell extremely quickly. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that rivers are usually straightened, built up and channeled. Those affected as well as people from science and politics are fighting for better flood protection and are driving forward the renaturation of rivers. At the beginning of June: During the disaster weekend, people in the municipality of Schwarzach in Mainfranken also tried to protect their belongings. Later, they demanded even more vehemently an effective flood protection concept for the region on the Schwarzach - and were bitterly disappointed by the plans of the water management office. The issue of renaturation is under political pressure. In the European elections, right-wing parties gained significantly in votes. That is why the beginning of June was the last chance for the European Renaturation Act to be adopted by the Environment Council. A cross-border renaturation project is already being implemented on the Danube. Initial successes are already visible on a section of the river east of Vienna: plant and animal populations can recover because newly connected tributaries offer refuge. The construction work is being scientifically monitored with large-scale laboratory tests. Author: Theresa Höpfl ????
