Professional carers are appointed by the district judge for people in emergency situations. They manage finances, organize doctor's visits and nursing services, and they decide whether those in care live in a home or in their own four walls. But many people don't have enough time for this demanding work. When life gets out of control Bernd Seifriz-Geiger from the Association for Care in Esslingen looks after sick and elderly people on behalf of the district court who cannot cope with their everyday lives alone. "When I go to the homes of those in need of help for the first time, many are frightened. Some would prefer not to let me into their homes at all," says the qualified social worker and business economist. The 53-year-old understands such reactions. Because by court order he manages important areas of these people's lives almost overnight. He has access to their accounts, talks to doctors, and can decide where the people in care live. The care system often leaves little time for people One of his protégés is a former pastor from Esslingen. The 72-year-old suffered from depression and had to undergo a serious operation - his apartment became increasingly neglected, mail and bills remained unopened. A typical situation for the experienced carer. Bernd Seifriz-Geiger would like to have more time for such people. But the care system often does not allow this, and payments are made in small flat rates. Carers who have too few clients can hardly make ends meet. "betrifft" author Nicole Würth accompanied two professional carers in their work. She visited sick and elderly people who are grateful, and those who want their old lives back - without a carer. The film also examines the question of whether there are many black sheep in the industry who shamelessly exploit those in need. We broadcast this documentary by Nicole Würth from the SWRtrifft series for the first time on November 27, 2019 under the title: Carers - Who helps when nothing else works? All statements and facts correspond to the status at the time and have not been updated since then.
