A video about the lithium-ion alternatives: sodium-ion battery, potassium-ion battery, magnesium battery, calcium battery and zinc-ion battery. 30 years after its market launch, the lithium-ion battery has become the most widely used battery cell concept. However, the increasing demand for lithium batteries is leading to problems in the procurement of raw materials and components. It is therefore necessary to develop alternative cell concepts based on raw materials that are more readily available and ensure a safe, sustainable and cost-efficient supply of high-performance batteries. These batteries are also called post-lithium batteries and are based on sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium or zinc, for example. Prof. Maximilian Fichtner from the (Helmholtz Institute Ulm) and Prof. Jürgen Janek (Justus Liebig University Giessen) explain the potential of cell concepts without lithium. At the moment, the sodium-ion battery stands out because it has made it onto the market and into electric cars and stationary battery storage systems, mainly in China, within a short period of time. The question now is, which other cell chemistry will be the next to enter the market? Episodes on sodium-ion batteries: • Research success: sodium-ion batte... • Sodium-ion batteries: production in Germany... Potassium-ion battery: • Potassium as a starter battery soon possible...
