ANTONIO GASBARRINI Today's meeting with Prof. Antonio Gasbarrini, Director of the Complex Operating Unit of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology of the Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli IRCCS is dedicated to a journey into the complex and fascinating world of the "INTESTINAL ECOSYSTEM, BRAIN AND IMMUNITY" to learn about the most recent scientific evidence on the role of the microbiota in influencing our state of health or disease and to delve into some concepts related to the functioning of our immune system. We will therefore talk about what has been defined as MICROBIOTA REVOLUTION. Among others, we will address the following topics: 1 - A photograph of the microbiota, this organ that we are learning to know but that probably still has a lot to tell us, why is it so important to study, analyze and in the future maybe even correct where necessary? 2 - Is there a concept that can help us better understand the role of a healthy microbiota, and that is INTESTINAL PERMEABILITY, and in the case of an altered microbiota of hyper-permeability, what can hyper-permeability entail? 2 - Two important words, eubiosis and dysbiosis. How does an altered microbiota affect the correct functioning of our immune system? 3 - I would define a healthy microbiota as the foundation for a correct functioning of the immune system that allows us to face external aggressions. How and when are these foundations built, when is the core microbiota formed that will accompany us throughout our lives? 4 - We talked about the value of eubiosis, what certainties has the scientific community acquired to date regarding the characterization of a healthy microbiota, is there what we could call a passport, an identikit of a healthy microbiota? 5 - The link between microbiota and the correct functioning of the immune system is clear and strong, never before have we had such proof of the importance of an efficient and powerful immune system that can activate against viruses and other pathogenic microorganisms, is it possible to arm and strengthen the immune system with populations of microorganisms that are, let's say, friendly? In essence, how can we protect and make our microbiota healthy?
