"Hello!" calls a bedridden patient so loudly that it echoes through the hospital corridor. Nursing student Nicole was actually just about to care for another patient and rushes to the older woman. "What's going on?" she asks. The patient does not understand why she has to wait so long for a doctor. Nicole would like to stay with her, but the other patient is waiting too. "I'll be right back, then we can chat a bit, okay?" says Nicole and hurries on. "Time is a precious commodity," says Nicole, "and you know that you will reach your limits in nursing." Nevertheless, she decided to become a nurse. She ignored comments like: "Nursing? I could never do that!" and started her training as a nurse with 16 others on April 1, 2022 in Mettmann. Her motivation is high. Like Nicole, her colleagues Emily, Imane and Trinity also want to become good nurses. The training at the Bergisch Land Evangelical Nursing Academy lasts three years. Practical training and vocational school alternate. "I think a lot of people think that we just wash the patients a bit and check that there is enough food. And that is far from the case. We need complex medical knowledge," says Trinity. The nursing profession is physically and mentally demanding. Because there is a shortage of skilled nurses, the trainees on the wards repeatedly find themselves in emotionally exceptional situations. "When two patients ring the bell at the same time and another is bleeding at the ward door because his bandage has come off, then no one asks whether we are trainees or whether we can already do everything," says Trinity. "And after work I watch medical series to relax." 'Menschen hautnah' accompanies the four nursing students and their class through their first year of training and gives a personal look behind the scenes at the hospital.
