In the last few months, thousands of prisoners have been released from prisons in Great Britain because the prisons are too full. But this has done little to change the intolerable conditions on the ground. Rats, cockroaches, constant violence and a dramatic shortage of staff: the conditions in the vast majority of British prisons are catastrophic. The prisoners are often locked in their cells for 23 hours a day because there are not enough security guards. Many guards are happy if they have just one day a week when there are no violent scenes between the inmates. And: British prisons are so overcrowded that the new government has to release more than 5,000 prisoners early by the end of October - all those who have served at least 40 percent of their time. Violent offenders are exempt from this rule. But outside the prisons, the frustration continues: a lack of prospects, accommodation with other ex-prisoners, violence and a very high recidivism rate. ????
