HELLEVOETSLUIS - His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange reopened the restored fortifications of this city on Tuesday 26 June 2012 in the Fortress of Hellevoetsluis. In 2010, the restoration of the complex of ramparts and structures that were constructed between 1695 and 1710 to protect the then naval port of Hellevoetsluis began. In the centuries that followed, the structures were further expanded. In addition to defensive structures, the fortress offered housing to over 4,000 port employees at the end of the 1800s and played a role during the First and Second World Wars. In addition to the fortress walls with bastions, the fortifications include Kazerne Haerlem (1881), a gunpowder and projectile magazine, underground bunkers and a torpedo station. In addition to protection against water, the restored fortress also offers a freely accessible walking area.
