President Prabowo's Test Against Corruption, Mahfud MD: Asset Confiscation Is Legalized, Easier!

KOMPAS.TV - President Prabowo has reaffirmed his commitment to creating a government free from corruption. Prabowo also clarified the issue of forgiving corruptors. Regardless of the pros and cons, the president's assertion that he will not forgive corruptors for free is a breath of fresh air for the strong efforts to fight corruption in the country. The discourse on forgiving corruptors was conveyed by President Prabowo, although he was finally clarified by stating that he would not simply forgive corruptors. President Prabowo explained that corruptors must return the proceeds of corruption to the state after repenting. Before President Prabowo's denial of forgiveness for corruptors, Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agatas held a press conference. Supratman stated that the discourse on peace fines for corruptors should end here. Peace fines are for economic crimes, but the Ministry of Law and Human Rights is designing a mechanism through a draft law on pardons, amnesty, and abolition. After stopping the discourse on the implementation of peace fines, the government is expected to no longer continue the plan to grant amnesty and abolition for corruptors. Professor of Constitutional Law at the Islamic University of Indonesia, Mahfud MD, assessed that instead of pardoning corruptors under the pretext of returning assets from criminal acts to the state, he encouraged the government to fight for the formation of the Asset Confiscation Law.
