Access to the city of Prados is via the BR 265 highway or the MGC 383. The city is 185 km from the capital Belo Horizonte. In the early 18th century, news of gold discoveries in Minas Gerais and the installation of a smelter for the metal in Taubaté-SP, influenced the formation of many groups to explore the territories of the Captaincy of Minas Gerais. In 1704, the brothers Manoel and Felix Mendes do Prado and their entourage arrived in the region where the city of Prados is today. The production of the Mendes do Prado brothers attracted other groups and landowners who settled there, starting a village where a small chapel covered with thatch was built, dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception. Later, the brothers, now wealthy, joined other successful residents of the village to build a new church with the participation of great regional artists of the time. Many conflicts occurred in the region, but even so, the village developed until, in 1752, it became the district of São João Del Rei. With the depletion of the gold deposits, Prados, which was already a reference point for traffic between the mining areas for the resting of cattle drivers, groups and trade of goods, began to manufacture leather goods, earning it fame and tradition. On April 15, 1890, it was separated from Tiradentes and Barbacena to become the municipality of Prados. Today, June 2024, the municipality of Prados has a population approaching 10,000 inhabitants, with a territorial domain of 264.115 km², at an altitude of 979 m and is bathed by the Rio das Mortes, Carandaí and Elvas rivers that belong to the Rio Grande basin. The municipalities that border the municipality of Prados are: Carandaí, Dores de Campos, Barroso, Barbacena, São João Del Rei, Tiradentes, Coronel Xavier Chaves and Lagoa Dourada. The basis of the economy of Prados is the poultry slaughter industry, footwear and PPE equipment, wood and iron handicrafts. In agriculture, Prados produces coffee, sugar cane, beans, cassava and corn, among others. In tourism, Prados is rich in history since the Gold Cycle, the Emboabas War and the Inconfidência Mineira, as a stage for conflicts and with many activist characters born in the city. Its cobblestone streets, mansions and churches take us back to the past, even for those who don't know its history. The most visited spots are: Bichinho District (Vitoriano Veloso), Oeste de Minas Railway Station, Nossa Senhora do Livramento Chapel, Francisco Virgolino Museum, Mirante do Cruzeiro, Nossa Senhora da Conceição Main Church and Exhibition Park. Prados hosts the traditional Music Festival every year, in addition to its popular festivals, exhibitions and religious celebrations.
