Research into potassium-ion batteries has increased significantly in recent years. Potassium is many times more abundant on earth than lithium and is therefore cheaper. In addition, potassium-ion batteries generate a higher voltage than their lithium or sodium-based counterparts. Despite their lower capacity, potassium energy storage systems can therefore achieve a comparable energy density to lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP). Dr. Fabian Jeschull from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology shows the potential he sees in potassium-ion batteries. Potassium-ion batteries use a graphite anode that is already industrially produced for lithium-ion batteries and has twice the energy density of the anode of sodium-ion batteries. Potassium ions are also more mobile than sodium ions because potassium has a smaller Stokes radius than sodium, which enables higher charging speeds and operation at lower temperatures.
