Lucius Annaeus Seneca or Seneca was a Stoic philosopher and one of the most famous lawyers, writers and intellectuals of the Roman Empire. De Brevitate Vitae (often translated from Latin into Portuguese as On the Shortness of Life) is a moral essay written by Seneca (Seneca the Younger), a Stoic philosopher of ancient Rome, to his friend (and possibly brother-in-law) Paulinus. In this writing the philosopher raises several Stoic principles about the nature of time, such as that human beings spend too much of their time pursuing worthless or meaningless goals. In his words, nature grants the necessary time to each individual so that he/she can accomplish what is truly important in life, therefore requiring each human being to organize his/her time well. "Life, if you know how to use it, is long." The study of philosophy is generally the best use of time, according to Seneca.
