What is syncopation and why is it so important for certain music? The other day I was browsing through an app for learning piano and I found the case of the song Eye of the Tiger curious. In the app it was simplified by removing the syncopations from its melody and it sounded very, very different. Syncopation is defined as an invasion of the tactus firmus of a musical work. It happens in classical music, but popular music takes this to unsuspected levels. In this video we will see the differences, we will see why there are things that sound simple, but are written in a very complicated way and vice versa: things that are written and read simply sound very complex. We will find out why this happens and finally we will listen to a beautiful passage from Beethoven's piano sonata 14 where he makes use of some of his characteristic syncopations.
