This is no longer a rarity in Europe. Around a third of all employees live in insecurity. Housing is becoming more and more of a luxury. Although they have jobs, sometimes even several jobs at the same time, they can barely make ends meet. They form a new social class that economists call the "precariat". Inflation and the unpredictable energy crisis are hitting the poorer classes particularly hard. Their growing fear of poverty leads to a feeling of social exclusion and also doubts about democracy. Social protest movements are increasingly being used by right-wing populist parties for their own purposes. The gap between rich and poor is growing not only in Germany or France. Even in Sweden, which many still see as a social paradise, the social gap is widening. One in five pensioners lives below the poverty line there, and women are particularly affected. In Spain, more than half of those under 30 are in precarious employment. How explosive is the new class of the precariat? What is the state of social peace in Europe? And how could the great uncertainty and polarization of the political system be counteracted? Katharina Wolff and Valentin Thurn explore these questions in "Poor despite working - The crisis of the middle class" and accompany young and old people from various European countries in their everyday lives in precarious society.
