In the militarized fictional nation of Amestris, ruled by the army, alchemy is a powerful practice used in combat and public administration, but it also hides dark secrets, linked to the horrors of war and the corrupt power of political spheres. Edward, who becomes a state alchemist, and Alphonse face mysteries and powerful villains as they try to uncover the truth about the government and Amestris' own past. The manga was adapted into two anime series: “Fullmetal Alchemist” (2003), which diverges from the original story because it was finished before the manga, and “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” (2009), which faithfully follows the plot and offers a conclusion based on the events of the manga. In this video, I discuss the political significance of alchemy in the universe of Fullmetal Alchemist, and I also talk about occultism, kabbalah, military doctrine, ultranationalism, ethics in science, post-humanism, steampunk and the economy of sacrifice. Yes, there is a lot to be said for the manga about the 6/1 mystical soldier.
