From 1977, Jessen worked as a freelancer for various newspapers, the NDR and the ZDF. From 1980, he worked for the NDR, initially as a freelancer and later as a permanent editor at Zeitfunk. In 1986, he moved to Radio Bremen, where he worked as a reporter, presenter and editor-in-chief for the regional magazine buten un binnen.
