In a special suitcase – the most precious gift – the heart, on board exceptional passengers – a four-person team consisting of cardiac surgeons and surgical nurses from the Jan Mikulicz-Radecki University Clinical Hospital in Wrocław, the route to cover – from one of the cities in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship to Wrocław. And most importantly – the shortest possible transport time. This time it took us exactly 58 minutes. On Wednesday afternoon, such a task was performed for the fourth time this year by police pilots – for the first time on board a police Black Hawk. Everything happened very quickly. On Wednesday morning, a request was received from the USK in Wrocław for help in transporting the organ. In situations where we are dealing with the transport of organs for transplantation, every minute is worth its weight in gold. In the case of a heart, surgeons have only four hours from the moment of its collection to its implantation. The transport is expected to take a maximum of 2.5 hours. The route to be covered by land is over 350 km. The drive by car would take at least 3.5 hours - this is definitely too long. For this reason, for the fourth time, the Police Aviation Board in Warsaw was asked by the coordinator for transplantology from the University Clinical Hospital in Wrocław to help transport the heart for transplantation. - In accordance with the applicable procedures and after obtaining permits, a three-person crew was assigned to carry out the task, consisting of: Senior Commander Pilot Marcin Gancarz, Senior Commander Pilot Ireneusz Kaźmierczak and Crew Chief - post. Norbert Hyjek - says junior insp. Radosław Kuropatnicki Deputy Head of the Police Aviation Board of the Main Police Headquarters of the Police Headquarters and adds: - Since, unlike previous flights of this type, in addition to the heart and the transplantologist, we were also to take on board a team consisting of two cardiac surgeons and two nurses, we decided that the flight would be performed in a police Black Hawk equipped with an additional fuel tank. This machine is large enough to comfortably accommodate everyone and has an adequate fuel supply to fly such a long route on a single refueling. The helicopter landed yesterday before 5 p.m. near the hospital where the organ for transplant was being collected. A moment later, doctors and nurses boarded it, and in a special suitcase a special load was brought in - a heart collected a few minutes earlier intended for one of the patients of the Wrocław clinic. - Due to our hospital procedures, our team of surgeons went to pick up the organ, which assessed it anatomically and macroscopically and qualified it for transplantation - explains Mateusz Rakowski, coordinator for Transplantology at the University Clinical Hospital in Wrocław, and adds: - This time we had a comfortable situation, because due to the fast air transport, the time of heart ischemia was relatively short. Such a situation significantly affects the effectiveness and course of the entire operation. Once again, the police pilots rose to the challenge and reached the hospital landing site in the capital of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship within an hour. The flight, as before, was performed under the slogan "GARDA". In accordance with this procedure, the helicopter, which is involved in the implementation of tasks related to, among others, public safety and public order, has priority to perform the flight. As the police - pilots, who this time directly participated in the implementation of the task, unanimously say: - There are always emotions during such flights, after all, it is about human life. We are glad that once again we managed to help. This is yet another transport of organs for transplantation in which police officers participated this year. Last Saturday, officers from Krapkowice helped in the convoy of a vehicle transporting a heart through a blockage on the motorway. Also then, the organ reached the patient in the Wrocław hospital on time. Text: Agnieszka Włodarska from BKS KGP Photo/Film: Karol Janisz from the USK in Wrocław, junior asp.
