The story of the ghetto uprising was dominated for many years by the narrative of fighters who rose up with weapons in their hands. But researchers increasingly often talk about civilians who were in the ghetto at the time. On April 19, 1943, about 50,000 Jews went down to hideouts and bunkers they had prepared themselves in the Warsaw ghetto to hide and stay underground for many days, fighting for each next day. They did not agree to be deported from Warsaw and in this way they resisted. Can we imagine that? A large number of them died in the ghetto, which was set on fire by the Germans, others were deported to labor camps in the Lublin region and were murdered in the autumn of 1943. In this episode of the podcast, Michał Kukawski, based on accounts and diaries written in underground hideouts, as well as interviews with witnesses, talks about the life and extermination of civilians during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
