The current episode of the MDR podcast "The Trail of the Perpetrators" focuses on a new generation of marriage scammers. They look for "lonely hearts" on the Internet and then cheat their victims out of their money. Investigators call these perpetrators "love scammers". They carry out the marriage scam professionally and in a gang-like manner over the Internet. Single mother Sylvia from Magdeburg is looking for a new love. She no longer wants to be just a mother, but also a partner again. Sylvia meets a man on an online dating portal. He introduces himself as "Derrick" and during the course of the conversation pretends to be a caring father and also sends photos of his 16-year-old daughter. He also quickly declares his deep love for Sylvia. They write to each other several times a day and even talk on the phone from time to time. The contact quickly becomes very close. Sylvia is in love. Then "Derrick" asks for money. He is away on business in England and has forgotten his credit card. Now he can't access his bank account. The single mother transfers money several times, a total of a four-figure sum. Then Sylvia sees a program on TV about "love scamming". Victims report there and she discovers parallels to her story. She learns that gangs from Eastern Europe and Africa exploit people's longing for love and security. She becomes suspicious, starts researching and finds what she is looking for. She realizes that she has fallen for a scam and sets out to find "Derrick". In the podcast, we explain this scam and how you can protect yourself against it. A psychologist also explains why people keep falling for marriage scammers' scams. And we talk to Michael Besson, a man whose identity was stolen by "love scammers", about the effects this theft has had on his life. The podcast at MDR.de: https://www.mdr.de/nachrichten/podcas...
