Fine textile products from Plauen lace or printing machines from Plamag once made it world famous. The rapid rise of the textile industry at the beginning of the 20th century turned the lace city into a wealthy city with 128,000 inhabitants. The legendary Kaffeehaus Trömel in particular exuded big city flair at the time. The appeal that extends far beyond the borders of the top city and the size of the house with up to 7000 guests a day is unparalleled to this day. But as steeply as Plauen rose in a few decades, it then went downhill. Destroyed in the war and battered by the GDR, Plauen was never able to return to this dazzling era. Until the Peaceful Revolution, the heart of the Vogtland was considered a traditional working-class and industrial city. After 40 years of no say and a feeling of oppression, stupidity and intimidation, the people of Plauen dared to take to the streets almost unnoticed and far away from the big scenes. It was the 40th anniversary of the GDR, October 7, 1989. Thousands of Plauen residents loudly vented their discontent and demonstrated peacefully and completely unexpectedly in front of the capitulating state power against the crumbling regime. It was the beginning of the end and two days before the famous Monday demonstration in Leipzig, the beginning of the Peaceful Revolution. The people of Plauen had to pay a painfully high price for the German unity that was achieved. An unprecedented decline in the city's history of traditional large companies from year to year robbed people of their identity. Of the 24 former industrial giants, not even a handful of shrunken successor companies remain today. Plauen is changing. The city center has changed its face with the castle terraces, entire districts are being structurally changed and the new Plauen center of excellence is currently being built in an old manufacturing building from Saxony's industrial development. The documentary was funded by the city of Plauen and the Saxony Cultural Foundation. #plauen #plauen900 #spitzenstadt Documentary by Martin Reißmann and Mario Unger-Reißmann (D 2022, 151 min) Further information and additional material on the film can be found at https://www.plauen900-film.de.
