Totally off-trail excursion in a remote and rarely visited area of the Apuan Alps. We start from Renara by going back a little on the dirt road we took by car. We go down to the river walking on large boulders on the water crossing the stream and heading towards the obvious ledge that appears in front of us. We cross it all and although it is a little exposed there are no difficulties as it is very very wide. We thus arrive at a saddle (also clearly visible from the road) from which we go up to the right and then briefly go around some rocks. We thus arrive at the beginning of the ridge that we follow all the way (many passages of grade I, some a little exposed, on generally good and paleo rock) up to a small saddle on the left that leads to Colle di Gronda. From the summit we continue along the ridge then descend steeply to a saddle well marked with two spurs that block the continuation. Thus begins the long bypass of Pizzo di Gronda (necessary as it is impossible to climb directly along the crest), which is done along confused tracks, very rare cairns and short exposed sections on rock, first passing by a saddle placed above a small ravine, then through steep woods and paleo via a few steps on horizontal rock, arriving at crossing the crest that leads to the summit. The crest is climbed with various passages of grade I or something more, on generally good rock but to be tested, paleo and woods, until reaching the crest of Pizzo di Gronda. We stay on the crest arriving shortly after at the summit (3h) from which we continue briefly until we reach an obvious cairn: this is the point from which we must descend in the direction of Renara. Here too the track is very unclear, between broken rocks and very steep paleo, but the 4-5 cairns scattered along the path help. Following the trail diagonally and passing two ridges that drop down to the stream below, we arrive at the upper part of a small ravine after an exposed grade I traverse, from which we turn right onto a fairly obvious trail that drops us off at the Lizza della Penna Rossa. Without any possibility of error, we stay on the lizza that leads to the stream bed, next to where we parked the car. TECHNICAL DATA Difficulty: EE+/I-II grade Time: 4.30 excluding breaks Difference in altitude: 450m Length: 3.5km CONSIDERATIONS Despite its short length, the tour should not be underestimated: some parts have significant slopes, there are numerous climbing passages, albeit easy, but it is the orientation that will really be put to the test. I recommend this tour to those who are already familiar with this area of the Apuan Alps as the entire excursion is off the trail and there are no signs.
