Humanity is facing the biggest revolution in history since industrialisation. To stop climate change, fossil fuels must be abandoned and the energy system completely changed. But is this a feasible goal? Time is of the essence: if climate goals are to be met and the survival of future generations is to be guaranteed, fossil fuel use would have to be replaced by renewable energy worldwide by 2050. So there is almost a generation left to achieve this. What needs to happen for the global energy transition to be successful? This documentary travels to places that could one day become the Saudi Arabia of renewable energy. For example, giant offshore wind farms in the North Sea or state-of-the-art solar fields in Spain could one day supply the whole of Europe with electricity. However, the growing global demand for energy must not only be met sustainably, but also affordably. Researchers at Germany’s Ilmenau University of Technology are working with a team from the California Institute of Technology to develop cutting-edge materials that will make renewable energy sources more efficient and cheaper than their fossil-based predecessors.
