Phra Pirap, the demon god who is respected as the most powerful dance teacher, is believed to be an incarnation of Shiva, the great god of dance and music. Any drama, music or art related to Phra Pirap is considered a high art with traditions, delicacy and sacredness. It must have strict rules and regulations. It must be performed with respect and appropriate for the occasion. During the reign of King Rama VII, the full-body Phra Pirap dance was invented for use in the royal ceremony to receive and celebrate Phra Sewet Kachadechdilok (the celebration of the white elephant). This dance has been passed down to the present day, maintaining strict rules and regulations, from the ceremonial steps, to the inheritance, to the selection of the qualifications of those who receive the transmission of faith in the sacredness of Phra Pirap. This has resulted in widespread respect in society as the demon god who bestows fortune and dispels evil. The various dangers and diverse roles that have changed over time of Phra Pirap have reflected the uniqueness of Thai culture from the past up until the present.
