Philosophy Seminar Series Ömer Albayrak “Hegel and the Modern World” 04/13/2017 The specificity of Hegel’s place within the richness of 19th century German thought has become a fact acknowledged by both those who embraced and those who opposed him. Hegel, who is seen by some as the philosopher of modernity and by others as the philosopher of post-modernity, is read in the context of modernity, playing an important role both in revealing the meaning of modernity through his eyes and in revealing the specificity of Hegel’s place in terms of modernity. In the context of fundamental concepts such as tradition, future, historicity and freedom, it was discussed whether Hegel still has important things to say for today, by touching on the differences between the view(s) of the previous century on Hegel and the view(s) of the beginning of the current century on Hegel. Ömer B. Albayrak graduated from İstanbul High School and Boğaziçi University, Department of Philosophy. He completed his master’s and doctorate degrees in philosophy at Galatasaray University. He taught philosophy at Istanbul Bilgi University and philosophy translation at Boğaziçi University. He is currently a faculty member at the Department of Philosophy at Istanbul 29 Mayıs University.
