The Parc Floral d'Apremont-sur-Allier is such a varied garden that today we are offering you a third report. After having, with Louise Hurtel, an overall idea of the property created in the 1970s by her uncle Gilles de Brissac (see: • ENGLISH FLOWER GARDEN AND MANUFACTURED... ) and discovering some of the most beautiful trees on the estate (see • SPECTACULAR, DECORATIVE TREES AND ... ) we meet the editor-in-chief of NewsJardinTV , Patrick Mioulane, in the company of Toni Poupin, the head gardener of the place. These two plant enthusiasts chat in front of a magnificent English mixed border which is one of the highlights of the garden. It is a large clump of mixed perennial plants, which is arranged along a path. For Toni, the secret of success is regular observation of the behavior of the different plants. It is a question of giving them a certain "controlled freedom" so that the different species harmonize in a beautiful whole. Autumn and winter are therefore devoted to divisions that rejuvenate the clumps and to the redistribution of plants that have not developed ideally. Toni "polices" during the season so that the most conquering species do not invade the more peaceful ones. Around 20% of the bed is modified each year and it is decorated with around 10% of seasonal flowers (annuals and biennials). The harmony of colors is of course essential, but the success of a mixed border also involves planting patches of one to two square meters per plant, in order to create a sufficiently attractive mass effect. Weeding is the most demanding maintenance operation, at least until the new plantations are fully established. Patrick highlights one of the key elements of the success of this bed, namely the staking of large plants. This is very important so that the plants do not fall over under the effect of heavy rain or a strong gust of wind. Toni takes great care with the staking so that visitors can admire each plant for as long as possible. He has also developed an original type of support which is presented here. Our two gardener guides then present some spectacular species: azure ball (Echinops), white pavier (Aesculus parviflora), pendulous sedge (Carex pendula), bocconia (Macleaya cordata), Afghan sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia), yellow pigamon (Thalictrum flavum), alstroemeria, eulalia (Miscanthus), lupins, agapanthus Throughout the presentation, Patrick and Toni share their remarks and good advice on each plant which gives this lovely report a very useful practical aspect.
