Generations of children have grown up with Paul Maar's books. The extensive work of the now 86-year-old writer, illustrator and author includes around 100 books and plays. In addition to the most well-known and internationally successful stories about the mythical creature Sam, he has created numerous other inspiring worlds and characters - many of them with deep backgrounds and references to his own life story. Born in Schweinfurt in 1937, Paul Maar grew up in the midst of the chaos of war. His mother died just seven weeks after giving birth. His father was taken prisoner of war and did not return until Maar was already in puberty. Suddenly he was no longer the likeable, caring tradesman, but a broken man who regularly took out his anger and emotions physically on his son. Maar is still extremely active today and regularly writes new works. He is currently working on a novel for adults, among other things. The writer has received numerous awards for his work - including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Youth Literature Prize. The Sams series alone has now sold well over six million copies in German-speaking countries. They have been translated into 30 different languages. What influence did Paul Maar's own childhood and the difficult relationship with his father have on his later life's work? Where does the writer get the ideas for his works? And what relationship does he have today with his most famous creation, Sams? Paul Maar answered these and many other questions in an extensive conversation with Daniel Fürg.
