Many schools are named after Paul Maar, and exactly 50 years ago he created a real children's book classic with the invention of the cheeky mythical creature Sams: The writer Paul Maar is an important children's book author, illustrator, and screenplay and playwright. His awards include the German Youth Literature Prize, the Bavarian Theater Prize, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the E.-T.-A.-Hoffmann Prize of the City of Bamberg, and the Bavarian Order of Merit. Born in Schweinfurt in Lower Franconia in 1937, he has lived in Bamberg for many years. He has been married to his wife Nele, a family therapist, for more than 60 years.
