Pr. Benjamin LALLEMANT - www.orl-information.fr In this information video for patients we explain when, why and how to perform an endoscopy of the upper aerodigestive tract. An endoscopy of the aerodigestive tract is an examination that consists of visually exploring the entire mucosa that lines the throat from the mouth to the esophagus. Why perform an endoscopy? This examination is indicated when there is an abnormality of the mucosa whose origin must be specified. This may be an ulceration, an induration or even a tumor. This examination has two objectives: First, it allows us to specify the location and extent of this abnormality. Second, it allows us to take samples of this abnormal tissue, also called a biopsy. Microscopic analysis of the tissue thus removed allows us to define its nature with precision and distinguishes benign anomalies from cancerous lesions. How is the procedure performed? This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The endoscopy is performed using rigid tubes and optical instruments that allow all tissues to be visualized in just a few minutes. What are the after-effects of the procedure? The after-effects are simple and usually allow you to return home a few hours after the endoscopy. Due to the samples taken, it is not uncommon for a slight bleeding to appear in the form of sputum. Similarly, discomfort or a slight pain may be felt in the throat in the hours following the examination. What are the risks of the procedure? Any procedure on the human body, even when carried out under conditions of competence and optimal safety, carries a risk of complications. Due to the instruments used, slight bruises or small injuries to the mucous membrane of the lips, tongue or even small wounds in the mouth may be noted upon waking. Much more rarely, when the teeth are fragile or poorly positioned, they may be moved or damaged during the examination. Perforations of the digestive tract are serious but remain very exceptional and may require emergency surgery. Finally, when a sample is taken near the vocal cords, edema can be observed which sometimes causes breathing difficulties and temporarily alters the quality of the voice. Pr.
