Marajó Island, in the state of Pará, has been sung about in carimbó verses and praised for its natural beauty. But the archipelago of almost 50 thousand square kilometers, at the mouth of the Amazon River, is also a scene of poverty, lack of sanitation and, now, difficulties in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Of its 16 municipalities, half of them are among the 45 worst in Brazil's Human Development Index (HDI), according to the IBGE. A partnership between the São Paulo Association of Wholesalers and Supermarkets and the Carrefour chain, with support from the federal government, sent around 15 thousand basic food baskets to Afuá and Chaves, two municipalities on the island, in June to alleviate the situation of the most vulnerable families. The food was delivered by the Navy. The Caminhos da Reportagem team traveled aboard the largest military vessel in the north of the country to monitor the delivery of the donations and saw the situation of the archipelago's population up close.
