There were four years of conflict, ten thousand dead, and thousands of men called up for military service. The fighting spread over a region of more than twenty thousand square kilometers, on the mountainous plateau of Santa Catarina. The Contestado War -- 1912 to 1916 -- involved locals, small farmers, squatters, economic interests, power struggles and religious beliefs. Today, the local population still faces daily poverty, in a scenario that contrasts with one of the most prosperous regions in the country. Caminhos da Reportagem recovers this story and investigates the reasons for the war, its scale and why it was forgotten for so many decades.
