Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the LORD's temple. 1:10 In her bitterness she prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly. 1:11 Then she made a vow and said, "O LORD Almighty, if you will only look on the misery of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant but give your servant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor will ever come on his head." 1:12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli observed her mouth. 1:13 As she spoke in her heart, only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 1:14 And Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine from your hands." 1:15 And Hannah answered and said, Not so, my lord: for I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD. 1:16 Do not regard your maidservant as a wicked woman: for it is out of the abundance of my complaint and wrath that I have spoken hitherto. 1:17 And Eli answered and said, Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant thee thine petition which thou hast asked of him. 1:18 And she said, May thy maidservant find favor in thy sight. And she went her way, and ate; and her face was sad no more.
