The fate of Poland or the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is a series of ups and downs that ended in a complete catastrophe, when the state completely disappeared from the map of Europe for more than 100 years. Only 100 years passed from the glory of King Jan Sobieski to the complete division of the state between three neighbors with black eagles on their flags: Russia, Austria and Prussia. But how did this happen? Why did sovereign Poland become a victim of a conspiracy of three empires? And why did it resist so little? How did Empress Catherine II, Frederick II the Great and Joseph II von Habsburg, having common interests in the region, manage to reach a compromise so easily? In this issue, I want to answer these questions and many others, and also try to speculate on the topic of whether the Poles are hostages of their history and how the partitions of Poland influenced it already in the 20th century and even in the modern history of the state.
