The word Parnis is considered to have an ancient, Pelasgian origin, the etymology of which is very difficult if not impossible, although various scholars have tried in the past. The name of the mountain, however, appears from 423 BC in Aristophanes' Nepheles. Also in the Rhodian comedian Antiphanes, in Theophrastus, in Strabo's Geographical Works, in Lucian's Menippus, etc. Pausanias in his Attica notes: "Mountains in Athens are Pentelic with quarries, Parnis where one can hunt wild boars and bears, and Hymettus which has vegetation very suitable for bees...".
