About :

The fifth episode of the Parques do Brasil series continues to Mato Grosso do Sul, where we visit the Serra da Bodoquena National Park. In the first block, we explore the northern part of the park. There, we climb Morro do Boi and take never-before-seen images of a huge field of lapiás. Lapiás are formed by the chemical reaction between rainwater and limestone, creating a landscape marked by impressive carved rocks. At the base of the hill, we go down the Salobra River, which cuts through the mountain with its turquoise waters, forming canyons, coves, rapids and waterfalls of great beauty. Along the way, we find fish of several species, such as the otter, the hyacinth macaw, the blue-crowned moorhen and the red-bellied wood rail. In this section we went to Poção, an incredible spring nestled in the middle of the mountain and, outside the park, we visited Boca da Onça, the largest waterfall in the state, at 156 meters high. The section ends by showing how the park is surrounded by farms with pasture areas and plantations where animals make quick excursions at dusk. In the second section we went to the southern part of the park and visited the Perdido River. This river originates in a wetland of enormous beauty, which flows into a sinkhole and disappears from the surface of the earth. The river resurfaces one kilometer later and continues through the Atlantic forest, creating waterfalls full of limestone tufa. The tufa is formed by very fine grains and fossil remains of beings that lived 500 million years ago, when this region was the bottom of an ocean. In this section we met the harpy eagle, the park's symbol animal; we witnessed the unusual encounter between a stick insect and an ant; and we observed a shy red-crested woodpecker, several leaf frogs, a taoca pipira and tracks of peccaries, red deer, tapirs and jaguars. The waters that originate in this mountain range feed important rivers that form the Pantanal.
